Your Data Stays With You

ItemSplit is designed with privacy as a core principle. All your data stays in your browser. We do not have servers that store your receipts, expenses, or any personal information. Everything is stored locally using your browser's IndexedDB storage.

What Data is Stored Locally

The following data is stored in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB):

• Receipt information (items, prices, people, assignments)
• Person names and assigned colors
• Receipt photos (if you upload them, stored as base64-encoded images)
• Tax and tip amounts
• Calculation results and breakdowns

This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly share it using the share link feature (see below).

Receipt Photos

When you upload a receipt photo, it is stored as a base64-encoded image in your browser's IndexedDB. The photo never leaves your device and is not sent to any server. Photos are compressed before storage to stay within browser storage limits (typically 50MB per site).

Share Links and URL Encoding

When you use the "Share Results" feature, ItemSplit encodes all receipt data (items, people, assignments, tax, tip) into the URL itself. This creates a shareable link that anyone can open to see the same receipt breakdown. The data is embedded in the link itself - not stored on our servers. When someone opens your shared link, their browser reconstructs the receipt from the URL parameters.

Important: Anyone with access to the share link can see all the receipt details encoded in the URL. Share links responsibly.

Data Export and Deletion

You have complete control over your data:

• Export: You can export your receipts as CSV, PDF, or JSON files at any time
• Delete Individual Receipts: Each receipt has a delete button in the history view
• Clear All Data: You can clear all stored data by clearing your browser's storage for this site

Analytics and Advertising

ItemSplit uses the following third-party services that may collect anonymized usage data:

• Ahrefs Web Analytics: Tracks anonymous page views and site usage to help us understand how the site is used. Does not track personal information.
• Google Adsense: Used for displaying relevant advertisements. Google may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other websites. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings.

Neither of these services has access to your receipt data, which stays local in your browser.

No User Accounts or Authentication

ItemSplit does not require user registration, login, or authentication. We do not collect email addresses, passwords, or any identifying information. You can use the entire application anonymously.

Browser Storage Limits

Most browsers allow around 50MB of IndexedDB storage per site. If you upload many receipt photos, you may approach this limit. ItemSplit will warn you if storage is running low. You can free up space by deleting old receipts or avoiding photo uploads for receipts you don't need to reference later.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page indicates when changes were last made. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
