Split rent calculator
The big room with its own bathroom shouldn't cost the same as the box room by the stairs. Split rent by room size with shared space factored in, by income, or evenly.

Three ways to split rent, and when each is fair
By room size
Everyone uses the kitchen, the living room and the hallway equally, so that part of the rent is split evenly. The private part follows floor area. Measure each bedroom (length × width) and add a percentage for perks such as an ensuite, a walk-in closet or a balcony.
By income
Each person pays the same share of their pay. It is common for couples and for friends with very different incomes who want to live somewhere none of them could afford alone.
Equally
Rooms of similar size and quality, same perks: just divide by the number of people. Simple wins.
Shared groceries and one-off house costs are easier to track as they happen; the expense splitter works for households as well as trips.
Questions people ask
What is the fairest way to split rent by room size?
A common method treats part of the rent as paying for shared space (kitchen, living room, bathrooms) and splits that part equally, then splits the remainder by each bedroom's floor area. That way the person in the biggest room pays more, but not so much that the shared space is ignored. A 50/50 weighting is a reasonable start.
How do I split rent by income?
Each person pays the same percentage of their income. Add everyone's income, divide each income by the total, and multiply by the rent. Couples often use this; roommates less often, since it asks people to share their pay.
How should a private bathroom or balcony be priced?
Use the "perks" column to add a percentage to a room's effective size. A private bathroom is often valued at 10–20% more; parking or a balcony at a smaller bump. Agree on it together before anyone moves in.
Should utilities be split the same way?
Usually no. Utilities like internet, electricity and water are shared roughly equally regardless of room size, so this calculator splits them equally.
