Pre-tax or post-tax: does it matter?
On an $86.40 bill that includes $7.20 of tax, a 20% tip on the food is $15.84; on the full total it's $17.28. The difference is 20% of the tax, so it grows with your local tax rate. In New York City, where combined sales tax is 8.875%, tipping on the total adds about 1.8 percentage points to the tip.
Neither is wrong. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the traditional guidance; tipping on the total is a small, generous rounding. If the restaurant has already added a service charge or "gratuity" line, check the receipt before adding more: that charge is often the tip.

Questions people ask
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
Etiquette guides such as the Emily Post Institute recommend tipping on the pre-tax amount, because tax is not part of the service. Tipping on the post-tax total is common and simpler; the difference is usually well under a dollar. This calculator lets you pick either.
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80. For 15%, add half of the 10% figure: $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60.
How do I split the tip between people?
If everyone ordered about the same, add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people. If orders were very different, use the itemized bill splitter, which divides the tip in proportion to what each person ordered.
What does "round up each share" do?
It rounds every person's share up to the next whole dollar (or other currency unit), which is handy when paying cash. The extra becomes part of the tip, and the calculator shows the effective tip rate after rounding.
