How the fewest payments are found
Step through the settle-up for the trip above. Change an expense and the steps change with it.
Start with each balance: what they paid minus their fair share. Positive means the group owes them.
Tips for tracking group costs
- Log it the same day. A receipt photo and a two-second entry beats reconstructing a week from bank statements.
- Split partial costs honestly. If only three people went kayaking, only three pay. Tap their names on that expense.
- Settle once, at the end. Balancing every expense as you go creates dozens of tiny transfers. The list above is the shortest one that works.
- Itemized restaurant bills are easier in the bill splitter; enter the result here as one expense paid by whoever put down their card.
Questions people ask
How does the trip expense calculator work out who owes whom?
For each person it adds up what they paid and what their fair share of every expense is. The difference is their balance. It then repeatedly matches the person who owes the most with the person who is owed the most, which settles the whole group in at most one fewer transfer than there are people.
Can an expense be split between only some people?
Yes. Tap the names under an expense to split it only among them, for example a kayak rental that only three of four people used. Leave it on "Everyone" to split it among the whole group.
Is my trip saved?
The trip is saved in your browser on this device, so you can add expenses over several days. Nothing is uploaded. You can clear it from the privacy page or with "Start a new trip".
Does it handle different currencies?
Pick one currency for the trip. If people paid in different currencies, convert the amounts at the rate on your card statement before entering them, so everyone settles at the rate actually paid.
