Which split should you use?

  • Evenly: everyone had roughly the same, or it's a shared purchase like a gift, a cabin or a streaming plan.
  • By percentage: you've agreed on a ratio, such as 60/40 for a couple or 50/25/25 for a business.
  • By income: couples or housemates with very different pay who want each person to give up the same share of what they earn. For rent by room size, use the split rent calculator.
  • By shares: families and mixed groups, for example 2 shares per adult and 1 per child, or 2 for a couple and 1 for a single.
  • By item: a restaurant or delivery bill where people ordered different things. The itemized splitter also handles shared dishes and proportional tax and tip.

Adding tip to a quick even split? The tip calculator works out the tip on the pre-tax amount and splits it too.

Questions people ask

How do you split a bill between 3 people?

Divide the total by 3 and round to the cent. Because most totals do not divide exactly, one or two people pay one cent more: $100 split three ways is $33.34 + $33.33 + $33.33. If people ordered different amounts, split by item instead so each person pays for their own order plus a proportional share of tax and tip.

How do I split a bill by percentage, like 60/40?

Choose "By percentage", enter each person's percentage, and the calculator multiplies the total by each one. The percentages should add up to 100%; if they don't, the calculator scales them so the shares still add up to the full bill and tells you.

How do couples split bills by income?

Each person pays the same share of their income. If one earns $6,000 a month and the other $4,000, they pay 60% and 40% of shared bills. Choose "By income" and enter monthly take-home pay (or gross, as long as you use the same measure for both).

What does "by shares" mean?

Shares are simple weights. Give an adult 2 shares and a child 1, or a couple 2 shares and a single person 1, and the bill is divided in that ratio.

Is it better to split evenly or by item?

Evenly is quickest when everyone ordered roughly the same. When orders differ, an even split makes light eaters subsidise heavy ones. Our itemized bill splitter assigns each dish to whoever ordered it and shares tax and tip proportionally.
